Lent Origin
The word “Lent” has Germanic roots and is described as the 40-day period of fasting and prayer observed by many Christian denominations in early Spring. During this period, Christians prepare for the spring holiday of Easter, which commemorates Jesus' resurrection from the dead.
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are the three largest Abrahamic faiths that practice fasting for spiritual reasons. Refraining from eating in all three is closely connected with additional prayer time, almsgiving, and food donations for the poor. While several Christians fast in different ways, the most common one is refraining from any food that comes from animals.
Lent Items at Sarkis Pastry
At Sarkis Pastry, we have several sweet and savory pastries that are perfect for lent. They do not contain animal products and most of them are our top sellers!
Sweet Pastries
1- Moushabbak: Made from a special semolina dough, our moushabbak is fried and dipped in sugar syrup. They are one of our most popular sweets and they are available in-store only!
2- Lokhoom: Our famous lokhooms are fried doughs dipped in sugar syrup. They are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. They are available in-store only!
3- Zulubia: A yeast-leavened batter, fancifully swirled into hot oil till cooked and dipped in a specially flavored syrup.
Savory Pastries:
1- Spinach/Tahini Spinach Boreg: Our homemade boreg dough stuffed with our famous spinach and spices/ tahini spinach and spices. Available in-store only.
2- Zaatar/Zaatar and Veggies Pizza: Our homemade zaatar blend on a soft manakish pizza dough. Served either plain or with tomatoes and onions. Available in-store only.
